NIST Seminar Which Future for US/EU Trusted Cloud Services? Procurement, SLAs, standardisation on a global scale

In a few years, it is expected that 80% of all cloud services will be consumed by other cloud services. The types of contracts that will need to be in place for these transactions will have to involve legal, local & regional concerns in order for cloud services to be useful on a global scale.

In a few years, it is expected that 80% of all cloud services will be consumed by other cloud services. The types of contracts that will need to be in place for these transactions will have to involve legal, local & regional concerns in order for cloud services to be useful on a global scale.

Building on long-standing synergies between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Trust-IT, CloudWATCH, is helping to strenghten ties in an effort to address new challenges around cloud services. These challenges range from procurement of services and contracts to service level agreement (SLAs), support the customer’s requirements and the terms need to be measureable for the buying and selling of trusted and reliable cloud services.

Currently, there is no standard way in which SLAs are supported across industry. What are the necessary components of an SLA and what are the definitions of the terms to be measured? How can the US & EU work together to ensure high quality SLAs that will provide the trusted cloud services to serve their citizens? Are there specific items in which the US and EU find challenging?

Billing is also part of the cloud future. What are those items that the US and the EU find necessary? Where do the other challenges lie? How will service brokering occur? Is it needed? Is transparency needed or required?

Panel Debate: The future of clouds

The forecast for cloud services remains bright and sunny, but in the not-too-distance future, most cloud services will be consumed by other clouds. What else is in store for the future of cloud services? What will be the proper course of action that the US and EU will take with regard to cloud services in the future? How large of a role will shared & interoperable services play in the landscape? What will international standards need to consider for these new kinds of services? Will older standards be updated and modified or can they remain unaltered?

Moderator: Robert Bohn, NIST
Panellists:

  • Joel Fleck, HP, Secretary of DAPS38, Chair IEEE Adaptive Management for Cloud Computing study group and serving as secretary for P2301
  • Francisco Medeiros,  Acting Head of Unit, Software & Services, Cloud, DG CONNECT, European Commission
  • Dawn Leaf, CIO, Department of Labor, US
  • James Mitchell, Strategic Blue, UK
