The Workshop on Cloud Networks and Cloudscape Brazil events held on 6-7th July in Porto Alegre, Brazil, confirmed to be a strategic arena to shape the future of EU-Brazil co-operation on cloud computing as an enabler for Big Data and IoT.

The policy oriented EUBrasilCloudFORUM project [2015-2017], here Trust-IT leads the communication and engagement activities, organized the Workshop on Cloud Network (WCN) and Cloudscape Brazil events on 6-7th July 2016, as part of the much larger annual Conference of the Brazilian Computing Society (CSBC 2016) event in Porto Alegre, Brazil. All submitted position papers and scientific papers are available online at the event page hereEC officials from both the EC and Brazil applauded the orchestration role EUBrazilCloudFORUM is achieving in terms of displaying mutual excellence from both regions.

Some Highlights from the Two Days

Securing policy engagement & future Brazilian funding
The event had an unexpected high visibility from a Political standing where both days were opened by representatives from the MCTIC (currently in charge for Government Communications). Maximiliano Martinhão, the new SEPIN Secretary, Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications for Brazil, personally committed pursuing funding opportunities for the 4th Collaborative call which will be opened in Autumn 2016. Augusto Gadelha, Director of National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (LNCC), Brazil, confirmed the importance of international cooperation with Europe to benefit research in ICT in Brazil.

Industry engagement with SME involvement is a must!
Industry and SMEs are THE keywords for the new Brazilian government. The participation of industry actors and SMEs as a requirement for future projects was emphasised during each presentation coupled with the importance to take research results to market in a short timeframe (within 6 months). Trust-IT, thanks also to the support from project partners assembled an impressive line of key players ranging from Start-Ups, Industry Players and key members from research institutes, thanks to working on cooperation efforts between EU & BR since 2011.

Legal and security high on the agenda
The session on legal and security aspects attracted the most debate with two very different points of view: the Government (presented by Heber Fialho Maia Junior, General Coordination of Management and IT Governance, Secretariat of Logistic and IT, Dept. of Governance and Information Systems, Ministry of Planning, Brazil) and SMEs (represented by Felipe Matos, Chief Start-up Farmer and Advisory Board Member of the Brazilian Association of Start-ups, Brazil). Legal aspects were a recurring theme in all other sessions.

Details around the 4th EU & BR 2017 coordinated call on cloud computing
16M€ will be available (8M€ from Brazil) for 6 EU-Brazil projects to be funded, mainly focusing on IoT & pilot experimentations. Industry will have a role already from this call, which will open in autumn 2016. An additional policy meeting may be organized by the end of the year in Brasilia, in addition to the policy dialogues, to present the call to the new MCTIC people.
