The use of Big Data technologies will pave the way for new solutions. Blue-Cloud is compiling and processing several data resources currently available under different European marine networks, data centers, and research infrastructures, applying big data analysis and machine learning methods in order to obtain FAIR data products (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). However, Blue-Cloud doesn't simply focus on data storage, discovery and access services, but also on developing and providing analytical frameworks with Virtual Research Environments (VREs) for setting up and running analytical processes by and for users to support their research.

The Blue-Cloud selected five dedicated Demonstrators as Virtual Labs co-designed with top-level marine researchers, to showcase how the Blue Cloud can shorten the time span between research and innovation in the blue economy field. Each service (Virtual Lab) will provide access to datasets, products, and computations routine exploitable to analyse datasets and (re)generate products. This is at core of the open science that is a pillar of the Blue Cloud platform. Each demonstrator is developed in close cooperation between the Blue Cloud technical team and with researchers in order to describe the required analytical workflows and to use these for designing the Virtual Labs.

SPEAKERS

Patricia Cabrera

Patricia Cabrera is a member of the Data Centre in the Flanders Marine Institute. Her work focuses on the integration of new types of biological observations in the European marine infrastructures. She is a marine biologist with experience in biodiversity projects, both at the scientific level and project management.

Guy Crochane

Guy Cochrane is the head of the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) and he contributes editorial work to a number of journals and meetings and has been involved in standardisation activities in many areas of bioinformatics. He received his PhD in cancer cell and molecular biology from the University of East Anglia in 1999 and carried out post-doctoral work in the molecular biology of photoreception at Cambridge University prior to joining EMBL-EBI.

Massimiliano Drudi

Massimiliano Drudi is Senior Research Associate at CMCC Foundation. He is responsible of the Physical Component in the Copernicus Marine Service for the Mediterranean Sea, and Project Manager for CMCC of Blue-Cloud project.

Anton Ellenbroek

Anton Ellenbroek works in the fisheries department of FAO of the UN to assist the development of affordable data services in support to the sustainable management of marine living resources, especially through the iMarine initiative. This initiative manages already some 10 VREs that all have dedicated services using the D4Science data infrastructure. As coordinator for 2 demonstrators in Blue Cloud, "Fish, a matter of scales" and the "Aquaculture monitor" he intends to improve the understanding in countries of fisheries and aquaculture in a wider ecosystem context for monitoring and planning purposes.

Sara Garavelli

Sara Garavelli is a Senior Project Manager & Shareholder at Trust-IT and she is the Blue-Cloud Project Coordinator. She holds a Master’s degree in logistics and organization for industry and commerce and a BSc Telecommunications degree. Sara’s expertise lies in analytical reporting, research and problem solving, primarily related to streamlining company internal procedures & informatics processes, and design of technological solutions (mainly ICT web-centric communication platforms & mobile apps) specifically for communities to promote their services and increase their revenue in an international market. She is one of the principal authors of the “E-infrastructures: making Europe the best place for research and innovation”. Sara is the coordinator of the RDA Europe 4.0 project, the European plug-in to the Research Data Alliance (RDA), and serves as Communication Manager the EOSC-hub project.
