Emerging 5G Business Models: Opportunities for SMEs and large companies - lessons from 5G PPP

20 Jun 2019

Last Wednesday, 19 June 2019, Trust-IT co-chaired a workshop at EuCNC 2019 in Valencia, Spain on “Emerging 5G Business Models: Opportunities for SMEs and large companies - lessons from 5G PPP”.

The event addressed the disruption in business models through the imminent arrival of 5G, for incumbent operators and verticals alike.

While opportunities will surely arise for large, well-positioned market participants, the real winners may well be those SMEs who have mastered the key technologies and services enabling the new business models emerging from the inevitable disruption not only in the telecommunications ecosystem but also in the vertical sectors making use of 5G including automotive, manufacturing, health, energy, and others.

John Favaro of Trust-IT hosted the session on “Business Models Across Verticals”.

The workshop is also co-organised with the EC’s CDB which is coordinated and delivered by Trust-IT.

Key outcomes

As the session concluded, the following outcomes were identified:

  • SMEs are well positioned to profit from the arrival of 5G through their specialized knowledge, agility and flexibility, and key roles in local economies.
  • Exciting new business models are emerging for 5G every day, from the broad scope of satellite network technology through the narrow confines of highly densified media and entertainment venues.
  • Enterprises large and small must dig deeply to understand and predict the most promising areas of return on investment as the rollout of 5G proceeds in the coming months and years.
