FAIRCORE4EOSC will advance the EOSC-Core for a FAIR EOSC

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is an ecosystem of research data and related services that will enable and enhance seamless access to and reliable re-use of FAIR research outputs such as data, publications, software and more.

One of the priorities highlighted in the EOSC Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) is the establishment of the Web of FAIR data and a Minimum Viable EOSC by 2027, featuring the core components and functions to enable EOSC to operate. The development of the EOSC-Core was initiated in the Horizon 2020 calls which have delivered a rich palette of use cases, demonstrations, data, services and tools. However, there are still challenges that require to be addressed.

Bridging EOSC Core Gaps

The brand new FAIRCORE4EOSC project will deliver nine new EOSC-Core components in support of a FAIR research life cycle, bridging the gaps identified in the EOSC SRIA.  More specifically, the components will enable an EOSC PID infrastructure, an EOSC research software infrastructure, support for sharing and access to metadata schemas and crosswalks and offer advanced research-intent driven discovery services over all EOSC repositories.

The FAIRCORE4EOSC consortium

Led by CSC–IT Center for Science in Finland, the 22 complementary partners of the FAIRCORE4EOSC consortium include service providers, research performing organisations and global expert networks. The consortium partners have long-lasting experience in the provision and development of research data services. They have also significantly contributed to the EOSC SRIA and are active members of the EOSC Association Task Forces,  providing the project a unique insight and capacity to boost the development of the Web of FAIR Data and Related Services, the EOSC. Project Coordinator Tommi Suominen (CSC) says:

"The nine new EOSC-Core components to be developed in this project form key building blocks in advancing the state of the art towards the ‘Web of FAIR data’. The new core components focus on  building the technical capabilities for increasing the FAIRness of research outputs in EOSC and thereby support European researchers in finding, accessing and re-using an ever-increasing amount of research outputs across borders and disciplines. To increase the uptake of these new components beyond the lifetime of our project, we work together with key players such as the parallel project FAIR-IMPACT and the EOSC Association. Thanks to the technical expertise, previous experience in EOSC projects and good connections to the main EOSC actors and stakeholders, our consortium is well-placed to make concrete progress towards the vision and dream of what EOSC can be."

Five user-centric case studies

The nine FAIRCORE4EOSC components will be crucial in supporting the FAIR research life cycle. Five user-centric case studies will drive the development and testing of the new components in:

1. Climate change
2. Social sciences and humanities
3. Mathematics
4. National research information systems
5. Research data management communities

The selected case studies share similar challenges that are common to many other stakeholder groups,  the co-design methodology will ensure the FAIRCORE4EOSC components are tailored to the user needs. User stories and best practices drawn by the case studies will be used to foster uptake of the new components beyond the project partners.

The project is envisioned to work in close collaboration with other actors in the EOSC ecosystem, including the EOSC Association itself, the H2020 project EOSC-Future, as well as the newly launched FAIR-IMPACT. The kick-off meeting of FAIRCORE4EOSC will take place in Amsterdam on 29-30 June, setting forth a first list of actions for the consortium towards the requirements gathering activities to be carried out with the EOSC community. Moreover, the week will also see an initial face-to-face alignment with the FAIR-IMPACT project, which also meets in person in the same city.

Our role

Trust-IT takes part in the Work Package on Early Adoption, Dissemination, Outreach and Exploitation, specifically by leading two key tasks:

• Dissemination and adoption; in which we stimulate the uptake of components in new domains, by organising dedicated workshops also in collaboration with the FAIR-IMPACT project. Trust-IT also coordinates the creation of case study user stories and videos, to easily explain the practical benefits of the FAIRCORE4EOSC components for research communities.
• Stakeholder engagement; this task contains the overall communication and dissemination plan, as well as key outputs such as the project website, the management of its social media and other public channels. Trust-IT also coordinates the project’s participation in external events, conferences, and fairs.

"We’re proud to be part of the FAIRCORE4EOSC Horizon Europe project with its strong consortium of 22-partners, each one of them active contributors to EOSC. Trust-IT will lead the FAIRCORE4EOSC Stakeholder Engagement, Communication & Outreach. We’ll be defining a Communication and Dissemination Plan already in the first few months of the project. And implement multichannel dissemination campaigns aligned with the technical implementation timeline. We’re looking to put the end-user central, and share their experiences via interviews and testimonials from use cases, events and virtual tours of the demonstrators. We’re already working on establishing a strong collaboration with the FAIR-IMPACT project on joint stakeholder engagement and dissemination activities fostering the uptake of both project results in the EOSC ecosystem."
