Trust-IT to Boost EUDAT Towards its Vision of Research Data Shared Across Borders and Disciplines in 2022

07 Feb 2022

EUDAT CDI enters 2022 playing an increasingly more relevant role in the European research landscape especially through its contributions to the development of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

The pan-European e-Infrastructure concluded 2021 closing two key EOSC related, EU funded H2020 projects - EOSC-hub, which provided a first set of core operational components and initial services for EOSC; and EOSC Enhance, which improved the functionality of the EOSC Portal. EUDAT enthusiastically starts 2022 now pursuing its vision of research data shared and preserved across borders and disciplines in multiple fronts and Trust-IT supports this in its communications and outreach.

Aside from being involved in supporting the development of “central” or “core” components of EOSC through projects such as EOSC-hub, EOSC-Enhance and EOSC Future and domain agnostic research data services for research through DICE, it is also currently working with specific thematic and national communities that are working to align themselves with EOSC such as EOSC-Pillar, EOSC Synergy, BlueCloud. EUDAT also supports other high-performance computing initiatives such as PRACE, ChEESE

Data Infrastructure Capacity for EOSC

One of the major projects supporting the development of EOSC at the moment is the Data Infrastructure Capacities for EOSC project (DICE) which brings together a network of computing and data centres, research infrastructures, and data repositories, many of which are part of EUDAT, which plays a key role in this EU initiative funded in 2021.

Through EUDAT’s services in conjunction with others, DICE will enable a European storage and data management infrastructure for EOSC. 14 state-of-the-art data management services together with more than 50 PB of storage capacity are offered. The service and resource provisioning will be accompanied by enhancing the current service offering in order to fill the gaps still present to the support of the entire research data lifecycle. Solutions will also be provided for increasing the quality of data and their re-usability, supporting long term preservation, managing sensitive data, and bridging between data and computing resources.

All services provided via DICE will be offered through the EOSC Portal, building upon its contributions in EOSC Enhance, and interoperable with the EOSC Core via a lean interoperability layer to allow efficient resource provisioning from the very beginning of the project.

EOSC Future

EOSC Future will integrate, consolidate, and connect e-infrastructures, research communities, and initiatives in Open Science to further develop the EOSC Portal, EOSC-Core and EOSC-Exchange of the EOSC.

EUDAT leads the project’s activities on stakeholder engagement, outreach and marketing and contributes significantly to pan-European alignment for EOSC. Several EUDAT members are also partners in the EOSC Future Consortium such as CLARIN, CERN, GRNET, KIT, PSNC, and Trust-IT.

Trust-IT and EUDAT Collaboration

This 2022, Trust-IT supports EUDAT CDI’s central operations as its Communications and Outreach Coordinator at the EUDAT CDI Secretariat since 2018.

At present, apart from coordinating and carrying out EUDAT CDI’s communications activities, Trust-IT is also working on a number of technical developments such as improving the EUDAT service catalogue and exploring integrations with Trust-IT’s products, further improving Trust-IT and EUDAT’s service offering to its users.
