Concertation and Consultation on Computing Continuum Explores the Future of Cloud, Edge, and IoT

The Concertation and Consultation on Computing Continuum: From Cloud to Edge to IoT, a two-day physical event, took place as part of the European Cloud, Edge, and IoT Continuum initiative. Organised by the OpenContinuum consortium in collaboration with the UNLOCK-CEI and SW Forum projects and guided by the European Commission DG CNECT E.2 and E.4 Units, this event brought together a diverse group of experts in the computing continuum domain.

During the event, the focus was on the convergence of Cloud, Edge, and IoT domains and exploring an open Computing Continuum. Participants delved into technical topics such as resource allocation, service discovery, data processing, and network management in cloud-edge-IoT convergence and decentralised architectures. These discussions provided valuable insights into the critical technical challenges and paved the way for collaboration and innovation in the field.

The event provided researchers, innovators, policymakers, and industrial players with a platform to exchange knowledge and establish collaborations. It showcased the accomplishments of EU-funded initiatives and projects, highlighted industrial best practices and use cases, and explored future R&I priorities and plans. The participation of major players in Europe engaged in various EU-funded projects, as well as representatives from relevant initiatives such as SW Forum, HiPEAC, NESSI, AIOTI, and FIWARE Foundation, contributed to the richness of discussions and the shaping of strategic R&I roadmaps.

By fostering collaboration, promoting open-source solutions, and addressing the technical and societal challenges of the computing continuum, the event took a significant step towards realising the vision of an open and inclusive society powered by an advanced and secure computing continuum.

Our role

Trust-IT played a significant role in the event as part of its communication and dissemination engagement in the EUCloudEdgeIoT.eu project. It managed the event’s social media channels and provided regular updates on the main discussions.

Trust-IT also joined presentations and panel discussions. Firstly, Maria Giuffrida, as a co-leader of Task Force 6 of the EUCloudEdgeIoT.eu community, shared insights on disseminating information and promoting awareness of the latest innovations in the field. Secondly, John Favaro co-moderated a panel discussion on “Software models, tools, and processes for the continuum,” where experts explored various approaches to software development in the computing continuum.

Finally, Claudio de Majo delivered a presentation titled “Computing Continuum: A co-habitation of domain-specific vertical solutions?” He discussed the challenges posed by the heterogeneity of the computing continuum and emphasised the need for further research in 5G/6G technologies and standardisation efforts to enable cross-sectoral exchange and semantic interoperability.
