Seminar on Human Rights and ICT Standardisation
On 14 April from 10:00 to 16:30 CET, the hybrid seminar on Human Rights and ICT Standardisation will take place in Brussels and online. Organised by the European Commission, in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the event is officially supported by the EU-funded projects StandICT.eu, INSTAR, and InDiCo Global.
Following the workshop organised at WTSA-24, this seminar addresses a pressing modern challenge: how can ICT standards ensure that fundamental human rights are upheld in the era of new and emerging technologies? As innovations such as artificial intelligence, the metaverse, and 5G/6G revolutionise our digital landscape, they present both remarkable opportunities for societal progress and complex ethical challenges. The discussions will champion a multi-stakeholder approach, exploring how technical standards can be proactively leveraged to preserve human integrity, dignity, privacy, and non-discrimination.
What You’ll Learn
Participants will gain insight into:
- This workshop seeks to explore the role that ICT standards, which are crucial on the implementation of products, services and applications relying on the rise of new technologies, can play to preserve human rights in a connected digital world.
- The discussions will focus on the role of technical standards in ensuring that these technologies are developed and deployed in ways that are consistent with human rights, including privacy, data protection, non-discrimination, access to impartial information or even right to work.
- This event highlights the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach, bringing together diverse perspectives from governments, international organisations, the private sector, civil society and standards development organisations.
