Standards, particularly in ICT, are the foundation of our daily lives, steering technological innovation, societal progress, and environmental protection. They guarantee that advancements are safe, efficient, and sustainable. Beyond their critical role in enhancing quality of life, ICT standards are vital in valorising research and innovation results, thereby boosting economic and societal development. Yet, engaging in the standardisation process can be complex and expensive. This is especially true for entities like SMEs and startups, which often lack the resources to participate in Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), Working Groups (WGs) or Technical Committees (TCs).
StandICT.eu facilitates access to standardisation with three main pillars:
- Financial support to EU experts working on international ICT standards and sitting in relevant SDOs. The funded fellows are then given visibility via various project activities and their results are collected in impact reports;
- An accessible EUOS European Observatory of ICT standardisation which collects general information on ICT standards and provides links to official standardisation documents;
- The Standards Academy – a freely accessible knowledge hub with relevant modules and trainings about education in ICT standardisation, with dedicated support and mentorship initiatives for SMEs.
StandICT.eu has distributed over 3 million Euros to European standardisation experts active in international SDOs, and it is projected to double this figure by the end of 2025. The project has implemented a streamlined digital process for open call management through a dedicated platform, coupled with a rigorous evaluation process conducted by independent external experts. It has supported over 350 funded fellows not only financially, but also by providing them with updated information on key standards and trends in ICT through 10 landscape reports and a diverse array of training materials, including resources specifically tailored for SMEs.
StandICT.eu is one of the leading EC-funded projects working to amplify Europe's impact on global ICT standards. By providing financial support to over 350 standardisation specialists over the years and supplying critical documents, trainings, events and resources, including deep-dives on novel or sensitive topics, StandICT.eu plays a vital role in ensuring that European perspectives have a role in shaping important technological advancements.
