Brief description

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to develop a web of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data and services for science in Europe. In order to achieve a sustainable EOSC, Trustworthy Digital Repositories (TDRs) providing long-term preservation services are required. The FIDELIS project aims to establish a healthy, vibrant and self-sustaining network of TDRs that will foster a supportive open science environment and guarantee FAIR data sharing also in the future.

Within its three-year lifetime, FIDELIS will set up, develop, and operate a European network of trustworthy repositories that will support the development and growth of TDRs within the EOSC ecosystem; foster harmonisation and interoperability across repositories to enable an EOSC federation of TDRs; and strengthen the upskilling of repositories and expansion of the network through an active training and support programme.

Our Role

Trust-IT Services leads the Work Packages 11-13, involving Strategic Alliance, Cascading Grants, and Communication and Dissemination Tasks. We support FIDELIS through:

  • Establishing and strengthening partnerships within the EOSC ecosystem.
  • Developing and implementing the project’s communication and dissemination strategy.
  • Setting up the TRUST-GRANTS platform for managing cascading grants.
  • Promoting and supporting training programs and open calls.
  • Supporting outreach events and managing the TDR Forum.
  • Consolidating the role of the TDR Network as a key reference in the Open Science landscape.

We are also involved in supporting Work Package 8 Repository training and support: Initiating Network cohesion and expansion,by  setting up training interventions for capacity-building in repositories.

Impact

In order to achieve a sustainable EOSC and maintain these resources over the long term, Trustworthy Digital Repositories (TDRs) providing long-term preservation services are needed. In this context, the Coordination and Support Action FIDELIS will harmonise the definition of what makes a digital repository “trustworthy” in the EOSC context and provide a framework for organising repositories to support each other in becoming and remaining trustworthy.

The FIDELIS project has significantly influenced the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by enhancing the capabilities and sustainability of Trustworthy Digital Repositories (TDRs). Key impacts include:

  • Strengthening FAIR Capabilities: Improved the repositories' ability to support Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data principles.
  • Unified Trustworthiness Approach: Established a consensus on essential TDR characteristics through the Transparent Trustworthy Repository Attributes Matrix (TTRAM).
  • Network Expansion: Extended the TDR Network across Europe, enhancing collaboration and support among repositories.
  • Training and Support: Delivered comprehensive training programs, peer-support initiatives, and financial aid to repositories.
  • Interoperability Promotion: Fostered interoperability by developing and sharing common standards and practices among repositories.

Funding

FIDELIS has received funding from the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement no.101188078.
