Code for Earth

We are proud to have partnered this year again with ECMWF to deliver and support the Code for Earth programme and final event. Code for Earth, an ECMWF-run innovation and partnership programme, fosters collaboration and supports advancements in weather and climate research, including in the Copernicus programme and the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative, which are both EU-funded. Since its first edition in 2018, when it was called the Summer of Weather Code, the programme has brought together talented individuals and developer teams with experienced mentors from ECMWF to work on cutting-edge projects covering a wide range of topics. This year, 13 developer teams participated in Code for Earth.

How it works

Each summer, individuals and developer teams from a variety of backgrounds collaborate with ECMWF mentors to test, explore, and develop open-source software solutions. These projects, which span areas like visualisation, machine learning/AI, user support tools, and data analysis, focus on weather, climate, and atmospheric challenges. Upon completing their work, each team receives a €5,000 stipend.

By promoting multidisciplinary collaboration and embracing open-source principles, Code for Earth fosters innovation and contributes to advancements in Earth system sciences. Since its inception, the programme has generated over 35 open-source software projects that have greatly benefited ECMWF and its Member and Co-operating States.

The 2024 Projects

This year, thirteen dynamic and enthusiastic developer teams were selected to apply their expertise and problem-solving abilities to tackle real-world challenges. Supported by mentors from ECMWF and partner organisations—leading experts in their fields—these teams brought diverse skill sets and fresh perspectives, allowing ECMWF to collaborate with innovative, motivated external groups on exciting challenges.

Our involvement in the Code for Earth Final Event

At Trust-IT and COMMPLA, we are incredibly proud to have supported the Code for Earth Final Event through a range of dynamic activities that contributed to its success. Our team provided technical support during the event, ensuring a seamless livestream on YouTube and managing the engagement of online participants. Throughout the day, we kept the conversation going on social media with live-tweeting, sending out tweets and posts to keep the momentum alive. Our creative efforts extended to the production of all design and branding materials, including eye-catching roll-up banners, posters, a dedicated website page with a branded agenda, and a collection of vibrant gadgets such as tote bags, caps, notebooks, stickers, sustainable pencils, and reusable water bottles. To further amplify the event’s impact, we produced video interviews with the participating teams, which will be shared for broader dissemination. The event was a success, with more than 50 people tuning in to the stream throughout the day and an engaged audience (online and in person) that elevated the energy and excitement of the occasion.
