World Brain Day

Every year, World Brain Day draws attention to one of the major challenges of contemporary healthcare: protecting brain health. Traumatic brain injuries, strokes and neurological disorders affect millions of people worldwide and require increasingly effective tools for diagnosis, monitoring and treatment.
As we know, artificial intelligence and digital technologies are increasingly opening up new opportunities to make these activities faster, more accurate and more personalised. However, in healthcare, innovation cannot rely solely on technological progress: it must necessarily demonstrate that it is safe, reliable and truly effective in clinical settings. In this context, testing and validation now represent a fundamental stage in the innovation journey.

In Europe, Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs) help companies transform promising ideas into technologies ready for clinical use by providing testing environments, regulatory expertise and validation services.
One example is the collaboration between Sonovum GmbH and Fraunhofer IIS within TEF-Health, recently featured in a success story published by CoordinaTEF.
The company developed an AI-based solution to non-invasively measure intracranial pressure in patients suffering from severe traumatic brain injuries. Through structured testing at the Fraunhofer IIS Multimodal Biosignal Laboratory, the technology progressed from TRL 6 to TRL 8, strengthening the clinical evidence required for the subsequent pathway towards market deployment.

It therefore becomes clear that, in healthcare, trust is built through evidence: evidence that reduces uncertainty and creates the conditions for innovation to deliver tangible improvements in patients’ lives.
