StandICT.eu Empowering the Standardisation Experts Shaping the Green Transition
This year’s 14 October World Standards Day 2026 is dedicated to SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy. In this article we look at how StandICT.eu supports European experts in shaping standards across multiple technology domains, including sustainable and energy-efficient digital infrastructure.
Organised by the IEC, ISO and ITU under the World Standards Cooperation, the World Standards Day’s mission is to affirm the importance of the Standards Development Goals and how standards can make products, services and infrastructure safe, interoperable and reliable.
Spotlight on SDG 7 - Affordable and clean energy
SDG 7 is a particularly relevant theme today, as the global transition to green energy is accelerating, with many countries still facing challenges in grid stability, system integration, affordability and access.
Standards are a powerful tool to support this transition by turning policy goals, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 Agenda, into technical requirements that industry and public authorities can apply. This year's theme, "Shared vision for a better world: Spotlight on SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy", focuses on how standards can foster reliable and clean energy to enable economic growth, education and digital transformation.
Turning this vision into practice requires experts who can take part in drafting standards and have the time, resources and knowledge to contribute effectively. Enabling that participation is the purpose of the EU-funded project StandICT.eu.
StandICT.eu: Turning Expertise into Standards
StandICT.eu and World Standards Day share the same mission: using standardisation to advance the technological and societal priorities that matter most to Europe. The standards drafted today define how Europe’s digital and green transitions will work tomorrow.
This is why, since 2018, the StandICT.eu Fellowship Programme has channeled over €7 million to more than 900 of Europe’s recognised experts across a wide range of technology topics to support their contributions to European and international standardisation.
That momentum continues: our 3rd Open Call has just closed with 188 applications submitted, including three in the ICT Environmental Impact domain. Over the years, themes closely aligned with this year’s World Standards Day have featured among the topics addressed by StandICT.eu applicants. Examples include proposals to develop new standards for assessing the energy efficiency and environmental impact of AI systems, blockchain technologies and critical infrastructure.
Shaping Tomorrow’s Clean Energy, One Standard at a Time
The impact of StandICT.eu’s Fellowship Programme is reflected in the work of its funded experts, whose contributions to international standardisation help address the challenges of the green transition. In particular, their work on measuring energy consumption and improving the environmental performance of digital networks shows how ICT standards can support the objectives of SDG 7.
Two examples illustrate this contribution:
- Per Andersson contributed to the development and revision of multiple standards across IETF working groups, including NETCONF, GREEN, OPSAWG and OPSAREA, advancing several Internet-Drafts towards publication. His work helped establish frameworks for measuring network energy consumption and ensuring data provenance, enabling more reliable environmental impact assessments and supporting energy-efficient network operations.
- Marisol Palmero contributed to the development of new IETF standards for network energy monitoring, co-authoring several Internet-Drafts within the GREEN, IVY, NMOP and PIM Working Groups. Her work advanced a new YANG model for measuring network power and energy consumption, enabling more consistent environmental impact assessments and supporting energy-efficient network operations through verifiable data.
Trust-IT Services has coordinated StandICT.eu for five consecutive editions. We believe that the technology of the future becomes green not only in the R&D laboratory, but also at the standardisation table. This is why we lead the StandICT.eu’s fellowship programme, capacity building, event organisation and mentorship programme, adapting them to what the European standardisation experts of today need most to shape the clean energy technologies of tomorrow.
Help advance clean energy standardisation through the opportunities offered by StandICT.eu.
