AI-SPRINT concluded its three-year journey in December 2023, marking a significant milestone in the field of artificial intelligence. Led by Politecnico di Milano, the project has been dedicated to advancing the design and operation of AI applications in computing continua.
The culmination of this journey was marked by a project review held at the premises of the European Commission, where the AI-SPRINT team presented their main achievements and innovations. This review showcased the efforts and collaborative work of the team, highlighting key milestones and breakthroughs achieved over the past three years.
Throughout the duration of the project, the team has developed and implemented cutting-edge solutions, addressing a novel framework for the design and operation of AI applications. These achievements represent a significant contribution to the field of artificial intelligence, with the potential to drive innovation and shape the future of computing.
During the final project review, members of the AI-SPRINT team provided an overview of their main achievements, summarising key milestones and breakthroughs. These achievements include the development of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and the AI-SPRINT Studio, the collaboration with the AI on Demand Platform, and the launch of a start-up connected to the work brought by the Personalised Healthcare use case.
The AI-SPRINT MOOCs
In an effort to democratise access to cutting-edge AI technologies and foster a deeper understanding of its components, the AI-SPRINT project has launched a series of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that are accessible for free. These courses aim to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to leverage AI technologies effectively in various applications.
The first MOOC “Enabling AI at the Edge: design, security performance, and runtime management” delves into the rapid growth of cloud computing, its challenges, and the increasing importance of edge computing.
The second MOOC, titled “Docker Containers, Serverless Computing, AI-SPRINT Design, TOSCARIZER, COMPSs, dislib & runtime management” provides a comprehensive understanding of the AI-SPRINT tools and the AI-SPRINT Design, which standardises the project’s application architecture and provides a user-friendly interface to the AI-SPRINT framework.
The third MOOC focuses on "Federated Learning and Neural Architecture Search" showcasing how these techniques have contributed to the development of the AI-SPRINT framework.
The fourth and last MOOC “Confidentiality Computing and Edge Security” presents innovative tools and methods designed to enhance security and privacy in edge computing environments, enabling safe and efficient deployment of AI applications.

AI on Demand Platform
AI SPRINT is proud to announce its presence on the AI On Demand Platform, a community-driven channel empowering European AI research and innovation while ensuring that European values of trustworthiness, transparency, and privacy are preserved in applications of artificial intelligence. AI-SPRINT is a perfect fit for the vision of the AI on Demand community. The many tools offered include Secure Generative Data Exchange, a facility to allow users to exchange generative models securely with a server while preserving individual privacy; and the GPU Scheduler, ensuring reduced energy expenditures in intensive cloud-based applications.
On the AI on Demand Platform, you can also browse the three use cases demonstrating the power and flexibility of AI SPRINT. In the Personalised Healthcare application, the power of AI enhanced the monitoring of patients for stroke risk, one of the major causes of death today. Read about how a wearable device was integrated into a cross-continuum application that brought rich analytics onto the desktops of doctors. In the Farming 4.0 use case, a winegrower improved its balance sheet through AI-optimised pesticide spraying in its vineyards – while reducing the impact on the environment through reduced dosages. Finally, the Maintenance and Inspection use case put the power of AI into drones performing close inspections on the large turbines used in the generation of renewable electric power from wind. The drones were able to fly close to the gigantic turbines and identify defects and damage long before they became critical, and ensure effective preventive maintenance.

AI SPRINT Studio
The AI SPRINT Consortium announces the release of AI SPRINT Studio, a set of AI SPRINT Design Tools available free of charge to help bring the power of AI to your applications. Today it’s harder than ever to navigate the plethora of cloud-based offerings and AI-based sensor devices to guarantee the resource efficiency, performance, data privacy, and security that end users demand in their AI-enabled applications. Too often, application developers need to design manually each individual component of the AI application pipeline, including parallelization. Application managers find themselves having to manually configure the environment and make only educated, qualitative guesses about performance. Infrastructure providers end up too often with naïve autoscaling solutions and suboptimal cloud operational costs. And finally, end users are forced to hope that their cloud and storage providers will provide the confidentiality and security that they need.
AI SPRINT Studio changes all that. With the abstraction layer it provides to shield you from the underlying complexity, application developers benefit from transparent implementation of their compute-intensive applications and automatic partitioning of their Deep Neural Networks. Application managers will appreciate the automatic containerisation and automated profiling of applications; and the Studio’s TOSCARIZER facility gives them the power of the OASIS standard language TOSCA to optimise their application deployments. Infrastructure providers will have advanced resource allocation facilities to cope with load variations, together with optimised cloud operational costs plus energy-aware runtime. And last but not least, end users can confidently run their applications knowing that they run in a trustworthy computing and storage environment, even on untrusted providers, with the quantitative anonymisation levels provided by AI SPRINT Studio.
Download AI SPRINT Studio today to bring the power of AI to your applications. No matter how complex the demands of your environment, AI SPRINT Studio is there to help.
