Trust-IT and its affiliated entity COMMpla are actively engaged in projects that contribute in different ways to the UN SDGs and namely to the Water Action Agenda.
Boosting FAIR exploitation of Ocean and marine data. The Blue-Cloud Open Science Platform
Since October 2019, the pilot Blue-Cloud project combined both the interest of the European Open Science Cloud, aiming to provide a virtual environment with open and seamless access to services for storage, management, analysis and re-use of research data, across borders and disciplines, and the blue research communities by developing a collaborative web-based environment providing simplified access to an unprecedented wealth of multi-disciplinary datasets from observations, analytical services, and computing facilities essential for blue science.
The Blue-Cloud 2026 initiative will continue the work started by the Pilot Blue-Cloud project and will further evolve this pilot ecosystem into a Federated European Ecosystem to deliver FAIR & Open data and analytical services, instrumental for deepening research of oceans, EU seas, coastal & inland waters. It will develop a thematic marine extension to EOSC for open web-based science, serving the needs of the EU Blue Economy, Marine Environment and Marine Knowledge agendas.
Blue-Cloud 2026 project coordination is managed with a tri-lateral collaboration among CNR, Trust-IT and MARIS. Trust-IT is the Project Coordinator and also the leader of the activities on outreach, ensuring consistent and content-rich communication and dissemination of Blue-Cloud results to target audiences, demonstrating the potential of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and fostering innovation in the Blue Economy.
Building Digital Twins to anticipate natural and human-made phenomena affecting water
Trust-IT is also working with key international players who are actively contributing to create Digital Twins for simulating natural and man-made hazards and phenomena, including water phenomena.
Destination Earth (DestinE) is a European Commission-funded initiative that will develop a highly accurate digital twin model of the Earth. Once developed, it will allow more accurate forecasts and projections for researchers and assist policy-makers in designing accurate and actionable adaptation strategies and mitigation measures. Trust-IT is one of the three partners in the "DestinE Use Cases" project, funded through ESA to procure use cases and build a community that can support early usage and exploitation of DestinE Digital Twin.
COMMpla, via its parent company Trust-IT, was commissioned for designing a new branding of DITTO, the Digital Twins of the Ocean UN Programme and for designing and developing its new website. DITTO is recognised as one of the UN Decade of Open Science for Sustainable Development programmes. It will support the development of digital twins of the ocean as “a realistic digital representation of assets, processes or systems in the built or natural environment”. Its mission is to develop and share a common understanding of digital twins of the ocean (DTO); to establish best practices in the development of DTOs; and advance a digital framework for DTOs to empower ocean professionals from all sectors around the world including scientific users, to effectively create their own digital twins.
Last but not least, Trust-IT is also supporting Mercator Ocean with outreach, marketing and promotion activities for the upcoming WEkEO online Hackathon, to introduce the WEkEO platform and the Sentinel and Copernicus services to a data-skilled audience.
