FAIR-EASE

Trust-IT and COMMpla driving visibility, sustainability, and community engagement for FAIR-EASE results

The FAIR-EASE project, which concluded on 31 August 2025, leaves behind a lasting legacy of services and tools to advance FAIR and Open Science practices in Earth and environmental sciences. As communication, dissemination, and exploitation partner, Trust-IT, together with COMMpla, played a central role in ensuring the visibility, usability, and long-term sustainability of the project’s results, reinforcing their alignment with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and related initiatives.

FAIR-EASE: Building Gateways for Interdisciplinary Science

Earth and environmental sciences require vast amounts of data from satellites, in-situ observations, models, and omics experiments. These domains are deeply interconnected, yet their digital architectures remain fragmented, with distributed, domain-dependent repositories that create barriers to integrated data use. FAIR-EASE was designed to address this challenge by customising and operating integrated services for observation and modelling of the Earth system, environment, and biodiversity. By improving data discovery and access, enabling remote data analysis, and developing multidisciplinary use cases, the project strengthened Europe’s capacity to support open, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research.

Trust-IT and COMMpla’s Role in FAIR-EASE

Throughout the project, Trust-IT ensured that FAIR-EASE results were communicated effectively and reached a wide audience, driving exploitation strategies that pave the way for adoption beyond the project’s lifetime. This work included aligning project outcomes with EOSC priorities and related initiatives such as Blue-Cloud 2026, which Trust-IT coordinates, as well as EuroScienceGateway and FAIR-IMPACT

By placing FAIR-EASE at the centre of policy and infrastructure discussions, Trust-IT contributed to securing its long-term relevance and integration into the broader EOSC ecosystem.

In parallel, COMMpla designed and developed the new FAIR-EASE website, which now serves as a comprehensive entry point for exploring the project’s results. A dedicated Results section showcases 16 Key Exploitable Results (KERs), structured under five themes – Data Discovery, Data Access, Data Analysis, Demonstrators, and FAIR Principles. Each KER is presented through its own page enriched with multimedia, documentation, and direct access links to Jupyter Books and GitHub repositories, ensuring usability and transparency for diverse stakeholders.

Sustaining FAIR-EASE’s Legacy

The project’s ambition has always been to actively contribute to a Web of FAIR Data, enabling scientists and machines to collaborate in finding, accessing, and reusing data across domains. FAIR-EASE results have reached high technological readiness levels (TRL 7–9) and are already aligned with the evolving EOSC Federation, offering clear pathways for future integration through national and thematic nodes such as Data Terra and Blue-Cloud 2026. This sustainability model, rooted in collaboration, ensures that FAIR-EASE outputs will continue to support multidisciplinary research addressing pressing societal challenges, from climate change to agriculture, human health, and safety.
