Brief Description

FairFuture addresses the unequal impacts of climate change by placing social justice and vulnerable groups at the centre of climate adaptation strategies. Vulnerable populations (including the elderly, low-income communities, migrant workers, children, minorities, and people with health issues) are disproportionately affected by extreme weather events such as heatwaves, floods, and wildfires. Despite this, equity and inclusion have often been overlooked in local and regional adaptation efforts.

The project supports Local and Regional Governments (LRGs) in adopting just resilience approaches, ensuring that adaptation actions do not worsen existing inequalities but instead respond directly to the needs of those most at risk. FairFuture strengthens the capacity of LRGs by providing tools, training, and governance support to co-design and co-implement climate adaptation measures with and for vulnerable communities, rather than on their behalf.

At the heart of the project is the Resilience Action Lab (RAL) model, a participatory framework that brings together LRGs, civil society organisations, community-led initiatives, and vulnerable groups themselves to collaboratively develop equitable adaptation solutions.

Our Role

Trust-IT leads two key tasks within focused on the organisation of international events as well as the development of the project’s sustainability and exploitation strategy.

As leader of the Event Management, Trust-IT oversees the planning and execution of over 24 international events across the project’s duration. These include 11 capacity-building events for Local and Regional Government (LRG) staff, 8 co-creation workshops dedicated to developing impact chains, 4 resilience pathway workshops, and 2 high-level policy events to review progress and gather feedback. A final demonstration event takes place at the end of the project to showcase the pilot adaptation measures.

Trust-IT is also responsible for ensuring that the project has a lasting impact beyond its duration. This includes the development of a comprehensive Sustainability and Exploitation Plan, which outlines how FairFuture’s results can be integrated into broader EU and global adaptation frameworks. As part of this task, Trust-IT leads the mapping of Key Exploitable Results (KERs), which will be updated regularly throughout the project, and coordinates the drafting of policy documents informed by project outcomes. These documents undergo two rounds of public consultation to ensure they are grounded in stakeholder feedback and real-world applicability.

Impact

FairFuture works closely with local partners in demonstration sites across Europe, while also supporting replication and upscaling in other regions through collaboration with platforms like MIP4Adapt and Climate-ADAPT. The project aims to shift the narrative from vulnerability to active citizenship and capability, empowering communities and bridging trust gaps between institutions and marginalised groups.

Through innovative governance models, inclusive engagement, and knowledge sharing, FairFuture will contribute to the EU's vision of a climate-resilient society, aligning with the European Green Deal, the EU Adaptation Strategy, and the Mission on Climate Adaptation.

Funding

FairFuture has received funding under the Horizon Europe Programme under Grant Agreement 101214343.
