Open Source Workshops for Computing & Sustainability

The European Commission will organise a series of open-source workshops for computing and sustainability on 2 December 2022 in Brussels.

“Open-Source Workshops for Computing and Sustainability are organised in the form of interdisciplinary sessions focused on different domains and digital transformation key enabling technologies such as Computing Continuum, Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing, with the objective of leveraging the power of OSS and OSH to increase the European sovereignty, digital autonomy and advance towards a sustainable ecosystem of intensive software companies and public administrations relying on open and sustainable software solutions.

A programme based on topic-focused participatory workshops, with the participation of EC representatives and relevant stakeholders from the different domains conforming the open-source community, user companies and public administrations looking for sharing experience and driving the actions towards the next generation of OS-based technologies and digital services.

More specifically, the event  will focus on:

  • The role of Open Source as an innovation enabler and sustainable business support
  • Open-source contribution towards European Digital Sovereignty and Digital Autonomy
  • The economic impact of Open source in the industry and the public sector

This workshop is organised in conjunction with SWForum.eu, the coordinating initiative for EU software projects, and is being held at the Albert Borschette Congress Center (CCAB).

This event is the meeting place to share experiences, discuss current challenges and opportunities and acquire knowledge on the policy-making perspective, R&I and economic impact of OS towards European sovereignty and sustainable digital services.

Following the work started in the conference "Open Source Beyond 2020 - Powering a Digital Europe" and applying the conclusions and recommendations from the report “The impact of open-source software and hardware on technological independence, competitiveness and innovation in the EU economy” towards the support of OSS and OSH to 1) A digitally autonomous public sector 2) Open R&D enabling European growth and 3) A digitised and internationally competitive industry, the EC is putting OSS and OSH at the centre of its strategies towards the European Digital autonomy.
