About OCEANITY

OCEANITY (Actionable DTO applications for wide policy, industry and civil society decision making) is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action that advances the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EDITO) by delivering three high-TRL, user-driven domain applications: Coastal & Urban Resilience, Marine Spatial Planning, and Sustainable Maritime Operations. Co-designed with policymakers, industry, civil society and researchers, these applications will be validated through 10 use cases across all four EU sea basins - Mediterranean, Baltic and North Sea, Atlantic and Arctic, and Danube and Black Sea - ensuring scalability, transferability and alignment with EU policy frameworks (the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive) and with the EU Missions "Restore our Ocean and Waters" and "A Climate-Resilient Europe".

Over 36 months (1 September 2026 - 31 August 2029), OCEANITY will integrate multi-scale physical, biogeochemical, hydrological and socio-economic processes into hybrid, AI-enhanced frameworks, expanding EDITO's service layer with upgraded intermediate services and new final services such as ship routing, offshore wind and nature-based solution planners. FAIR-by-design data pipelines and interoperability with Copernicus Marine, EMODnet, EOSC, DestinE and EuroHPC will guarantee robust, portable workflows, while What-If Scenarios and a regulatory sandbox will support participatory testing of policy options. The project is coordinated by Fondazione CMCC and brings together 19 partner organisations from 10 European countries.

Trust-IT's role in OCEANITY

Trust-IT leads Work Package 8 "Communication, dissemination, outreach and exploitation", the work package responsible for disseminating OCEANITY's results to its six identified stakeholder groups and maximising uptake of the three DTO applications. Together with COMMpla, Trust-IT designs and delivers the project's Communication, Dissemination and Outreach Strategy, builds and manages the OCEANITY website and social media presence, and coordinates four targeted outreach campaigns tailored to each stakeholder group: policymakers, urban and marine planners and coastal managers, data managers and service providers, Blue Economy industries, academia, and citizens and citizen scientists. Trust-IT is also responsible for leveraging synergies with EU Digital Twin Ocean initiatives such as EDITO-Infra, EDITO-Model Lab, FOCCUS, DTO-BioFlow, NECCTON and Blue-Cloud 2026, and for structuring the project's exploitation pathway to ensure OCEANITY's key results remain visible, accessible and sustainable beyond the project's lifetime.

Expected impact

OCEANITY is designed to translate Europe's investment in ocean observation, modelling and digital infrastructure into operational, policy-ready tools that support the EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030" and "A Climate-Resilient Europe". By the end of the project, OCEANITY aims to have delivered three new relocatable Digital Twin Ocean applications, validated through 10 use cases across at least three EU sea basins and reaching Technology Readiness Level 8, with all four European sea basins covered across multiple scales, from coastal to basin-wide. At least 20 policy and business stakeholders are expected to be engaged in testing and validating applications mapped to EU directives on marine strategy, spatial planning and climate adaptation, supported by at least two policy briefs translating project findings into governance recommendations. Beyond the project's lifetime, OCEANITY targets more than 400 connections or enquiries via the EDITO platform. 

Taken together, these outcomes are expected to strengthen trust and stakeholder participation, boost the sustainable Blue Economy, and reduce losses from environmental degradation through better-informed planning.
