The EU-funded project 6GStart has released a whitepaper detailing the transformative potential of 5G and 6G technologies across various vertical sectors, including automotive, smart cities, Industry 4.0, and media. Such an analysis is the result of a comprehensive mapping of the R&I use cases developed by the 5G PPP programme (2014-2023), collected through the Verticals Cartography online tool. Examples include groundbreaking applications like autonomous vehicles, advanced urban management systems, and smart manufacturing, providing practical solutions for diverse industries.
Europe has led the integration of these technologies, emphasising technological progress and broad societal transformation. Significant investments have been made in research, innovation, standardisation, and the development of practical applications. Extensive trial and pilot projects have tested and refined 5G applications, contributing to creating the Verticals Cartography.
As a result, the whitepaper provides key datasets on emerging trends to understand industry-specific applications, guide future policy, and develop effective industry standards.
Our role
Trust-IT is involved in three flagship CSA initiatives linked to the final stages of 5G development and 6G transition (6GStart) as well as new 6G development horizons (SNS ICE and SNS OPS) aiming to build a collaborative environment for the 6G Smart Networks and Services (SNS) Joint Undertaking, the next public-private partnership spurring the development of 6G. Its role involves analysing the technological KPIs and societal KVIs of SNS projects, monitoring standardisation trends among both the 5GPPP and the SNS JU R&I communities through two Standards Tracker platforms (see Standards Tracker from 5G PPP and from SNS JU), and engaging relevant vertical sectors through two vertical-oriented platforms collecting use cases and translating them into requirements for both 5G PPP and SNS JU research activities (see 5G PPP's Verticals Cartography and SNS JU Vertical Engagement Tracker).
