Brief description
ECMWF is the prestigious European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Among many important roles, they also coordinated the pilot atmosphere service (MACC-II) for air quality monitoring and operates two services on behalf of the European Union. In this project - supporting our controlled company COMMpla - we have been tasked with providing UX research, analysis and recommendations to ease overall access to ECMWF's impressive wealth of historical and real-time meteorological data in its upcoming Unified Data Portal.
Our Role
We have worked towards meeting this challenge in the gathering and analysis of extensive qualitative and quantitative data, so as to be able to provide a fully data-driven UX Report based upon findings. As requested by the Client, we have followed a rigorous UX framework:
- benchmark analysis of other websites within the industry;
- 1:1 interviews and 1:many workshops with stakeholders and end-users;
- definition of the website personas;
- moderated usability testing;
- wireframing and mockup prototyping of the new ECMWF's datasets catalogue.
Impact
Our role in this UX project has contributed to boost ECMWF’s potential to impact climate change: quick, easy access to free meteorological data is integral to combating the current climate crisis, as Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), highlights:
“Accurate, quality assured and freely available environmental data from ECMWF’s Copernicus Services supports policymakers and businesses throughout the European Union with the information, evidence and tools to make climate smart decisions”.

The rebuilt ECMWF data portal is the single interface for accessing the various data sources provided by the different ECMWF services. The new portal has therefore unified access to ECMWF's data with a centralised access point, enabling users to search for, explore, "buy", configure, and download meteorological data.
